Jamaican Lady Selling Cashews by the Road
The sky in the header for the web site is taken from this painting. Barb really enjoyed painting this one. Barb’s friend who owns the Jamaican restaurant here in Victoria, showed her a photograph of a lady selling cashew by the side of the road. She was struck by the photo and decided to paint it. The red fruits are the cashew plant. The red part is inedible. The little brown nubs sticking out of the ends are the cashews. To eat the cashew, you need to peel off the red stuff to expose the nut. Up here in Victoria, we just never see this. Up here, cashews are medium sized brown nuts and nothing else. So when Barb saw this photo, she really enjoyed seeing what a cashew really looks like. She enjoyed all the variations of colours of red cashews just hanging there, and, even now, she smiles when she thinks about the little cashew sticking out the end.

She also enjoyed the lady herself. She sees a woman who is just soaking up the heat and relaxing in the sun while she waits.
