Ting®
A survey of things Jamaican would not be complete without Jamaica’s own homegrown (literally) grapefruit flavoured soft drink – Ting. Barb wanted to do a painting of Ting, so she went out and bought two bottles. One to use as a model and the other to give her the flavour of the drink while she was painting. Her first idea was to paint a large bottle using the whole canvas, but her friend said “you could put four of them across on the canvas” and demonstrated it. All of a sudden, Barb could see four Ting® bottles on the canvas. Her friend’s nephew then said, “and you can have four different coloured blocks for backgrounds” and Barb could see four different coloured backgrounds. So, Barb’s simple Ting® painting transmogrified into Barb’s, Barb meets Andy Warhal painting. She is very happy about the group process that lead to this painting and has invited her friend and her nephew to sign the painting too, next time they are in Victoria.

This is part of the Jamaican restaurant series. Barb has a friend, Becky, who owns the local Jamaican restaurant . He moved to a new location, in town. When she saw that his new walls were bare, she decided to decorate! Barb is usually a serious painter. With this series, she decided to take a much lighter hearted approach and to paint with abandon.
But at the time, she was very busy. So the bottles rolled around and drifted from place to place for about two week.
Finally, Barb went up-island to visit her Dad who is in a nursing home. She was overnighting with her friend (of her heart – see Barb’s Journal ) and her sister. She took the Ting® and the art supplies and brought them out.
This painting is not for sale. It is shown here to be a complete record of Barb’s paintings. The Ting® name, symbol and whatnot are owned by Pepsi®.
